Math: This year Caitlin wants to complete pre-algebra and be able to move on to Algebra I next year. We plan to finish up with Saxon 76 which she began this past summer and move on to Saxon 1/2 by January. She enjoys the math and is able to do most of it on her own.
Bible: I am really excited about our Bible study for this year. We have chosen a topic that is already discussed at our house quite a bit thanks to John Ross- Exodus. We look forward to learning how God worked in the lives of Moses and the Israelites during the time of the Exodus and following. This study includes a flannel graph map of Egypt and surrounding area plus flannel graph pictures to go along with each chapter in Exodus. This study is for grade 7 by Abeka. I am hoping we will all benefit from studying it even John Ross and Heidi.
Reading/Spelling/Writing: Here is another really exciting change to our curriculum! We are using Total Language Plus Study guides and novels. You can read more about this exciting way of doing language arts at the Total Language Plus website. There is a study guide for each novel which includes vocabulary, grammar, spelling, drawing, and enrichment activities all related to the novel. It is an organized way of learning but feels like a unit study because the student gets to choose which enrichment activities to do. Each study guide takes 7-9 weeks to complete. We plan to do 4 novels this school year. The first one we are doing is King of the Wind. Caitlin is very happy about this because she is a horse fan! Next we plan to read The Bronze Bow. We will be doing this at the same time that we are studying the world of the Greeks and Romans in our Abeka history.
Grammar: We are using the Abeka Grammar and Composition as a base to make sure we keep refreshed on all the parts of speech and how to use them etc.
History and Geography: This is the best History I have ever seen. We will be using Abeka Since the Beginning Hisory of the World in Christian Perspective. This history covers Creation through the Twentieth Century. We will be doing this history in units of 9 weeks each. The units are: From Eden to Israel(The Beginning of World History and the Ancient Middle East), Preparation for and Response to Christ (Europe through the Middle Ages), Truth, Progress, and Revival (Into the Modern Age), and Signs of His Coming(Toward the End). We also have wonderful time lines and maps to help us through the different Ages.
Science: Alpha Omega Switched on Schoolhouse for grade 7. This is a cdrom which has all the lessons, quizzes and tests. It even does the grading and lesson plans! This is so much fun. Alph Omega has included some great video clips and web sites to go along with the material that is covered. This science includes lessons on our solar system and also human anatomy. This has made science really cool for Caitlin!
Art: We will be using Art with a purpose by Rod and Staff publishers. This has lessons on line drawing and proper watercolor painting techniques. Rod and Staff items are available directly from the Rod and Staff publisher. You can get a catalog by calling (606) 522-4348. Or you can order their products from Greenleaf Press.
