Reading- We are using Rod and Staff. There are three reading books in this series- We Learn about God, We Learn More about God, and We Learn about God's people. The stories in these reading books are very enjoyable to read and are also character building. Heidi is enjoying learning about the good gifts God has given us. There is a reading workbook to go along with this also which reinforces the reading lesson each day. We do reading lessons in the morning and quiet reading time in the afternoon.

Along with the Rod and Staff readers, Heidi is reading the Pathway readers. She is about half way finished with More Days Go By. We have just started McGuffey's Eclectic First Reader. These readers are beautifully illustrated with 19th century engravings. The orginal copyright date on this book is 1881! The stories show children being kind. We really have enjoyed these books

Phonics- This is by Rod and Staff also. We are now learning the different vowel combinations that make up long vowel sounds. I had forgotten there were so many. The phonics workbook helps us remember the phonics skills we learn in the lessons each day.

Math- Beginning Arithmetic by Rod and Staff. We have a felt board and felt shapes that help us with daily lessons. I made the board with some felt I bought at Hobby Lobby and with a donated piece of plywood.. Thanks to my mother and sister, we have more than enough felt manipulatives. We have ocean items, numerals, transportation, shapes, school items and more. Heidi has been practicing writing the numerals 0-10. We are also working on before and after. John Ross is able to recognize the numerals 0-10 also which is a great bonus of the daily review. Soon, we will begin addition facts with single digits. Heidi has already mastered the concept of addition thanks to our felt board. She loves to add goldfish to our pond! Another bonus to having the felt board is that the kids can be creative with the felt shapes and use them to make up their own felt stories- Some of which can be quite lengthy!

Penmanship- A Reason for Writing makes awesome handwriting practice books. We are using Adventures in Handwriting from Psalms and Proverbs Words of Promise. We started this book last year in Kindergarten. The book starts out with basic shapes and numerals, then gives a half page of practice for each letter of the alphabet. After all the letters have been learned and practiced, the student takes a verse from the Bible to learn for the week. The verse is broken up into smaller words which are practiced. On the last day of the week, the student makes a very pretty page with the verse and a chosen border for the page.
