John Ross Kindergarten 2002-2003

We believe that the kindergarten year should be a year of discovery, learning, and fun. This year John Ross has begun his own "Discovery Journal" in which he draws, writes, paints, pastes, or narrates about the things he has learned about and likes. I have listed below a few of the things that John Ross has placed in his Kindergarten "Discovery Journal".

Louis Pasteur

John Ross and I read the book Pasteur's Fight Against Microbes

by Beverly Birch.

Then we found this picture of Louis Pasteur on the Internet. We printed it out, cut it out and pasted it in his journal.

John Ross narrated the following to me about the book.

Louis Pasteur took some sugar water to his laboratory. The sugar water came from beet juice that was supposed to make alcohol. Louis Pasteur put some sugar water from both the good vat and the bad vat into a bottle and held it up to the light. The sugar water was supposed to make alcohol but didn't because there were microbes in the water. The microbes were causing the sugar water to not make alcohol. The microbes caused the sugar water to turn into a gooey, slimy, gray stuff. There was yeast in the good stuff.

John Ross drew pictures of the microbes and the yeast under his picture of Louis Pasteur.

We also read the book The power of Believing in yourself- the story of Louis Pastuer and other library books about Louis Pastuer. I believe John Ross will remember Louis Pasteur for a long time. I also believe he will remember that Louis Pasteur worked hard and didn't give up.

John Ross has also done pages on Beethoven, Mozart, the black widow spider, the mud wasp, Michaelangelo, the Garden of Eden, Abraham Lincoln, space, a spider sac that was on our ranch house fence, a mud dauber's nest, bara, leaves, the Maio people from ancient China, and more.

Along with his "Discovery Journal", John Ross reads aloud to me everyday.

He is reading the Pathway Reader First Steps. He really enjoys books about snakes, spiders, Star Wars, and Scooby Doo. We are frequent visitors to our local library.

John Ross enjoys learning Italic Handwriting using Getty and Dubay Book B.

We have fun with math by using our 1 inch colored cubes. I bought these in a bucket from Lakeschore Learning. We also use a fun game from Dorling Kindersley that uses flash cards with objects to match up.

John Ross is a member of our church preschool choir and has fun singing and using musical instruments with them. My sister has been helping the children start a garden with tomatoes, cucumbers and bell peppers.

John Ross is my all around helper. He dusts the furniture for us as needed and helps me straighten things.
